Emptying Your Cup - by Nonin Chowaney

One of my favorite stories concerns a Buddhist scholar and a Zen Master. The scholar had an extensive background in Buddhist Studies and was an expert on the Nirvana Sutra. He came to study with the master and after making the customary bows, asked her to teach him Zen. Then, he began to talk about his extensive doctrinal background and rambled on and on about the many sutras he had studied.

The master listened patiently and then began to make tea. When it was ready, she poured the tea into the scholar's cup until it began to overflow and run all over the floor. The scholar saw what was happening and shouted, "Stop, stop! The cup is full; you can't get anymore in."
The master stopped pouring and said: "You are like this cup; you are full of ideas about Buddha's Way. You come and ask for teaching, but your cup is full; I can't put anything in. Before I can teach you, you'll have to empty your cup."

This story is and old one, but it continues to be played out in our lives day-by-day. We are so enamored of our own ideas and opinions and so trapped by our conditioning that we fill ourselves up to the brim and nothing can get in.

The third ancestor in china, Seng Ts'an, said, "Do not search for the truth; only cease to cherish opinions." If we empty ourselves out, let go, and cease to hold on to our views, the truth will come to us.
We Westerners, who cherish our opinions, find this difficult, for we have been brought up to value the rational thought processes above all else; this attitude is deeply embedded in us, for it goes all the way back to Aristotle and forms the basis for much of our way of life, at least as it is taught in our secular public school system.

But Seng Ts'ans's way -- empty yourself of opinions and truth will come to you-- also finds voice in Western culture, not in the mainstream, but in the lives and writings of assorted sages and saints. The Seventeenth-century Catholic poet Angelus Silesius put it this way:

God, whose love and joy
 are present everywhere,
Can't come and visit you
 unless you aren't there.

trans. Frederick Franck
The deep peace and fullness that comes from living a spiritual life is not a matter of accumulating knowledge. If we empty our, insight and understanding will come. If not, we go forth into the world with our own ideas and opinions and we see the world through this filter.
Zen Master Dogen put it this way in Genjo Koan:
Acting on and witnessing myriad things with the burden of oneself is delusion. Acting on and witnessing oneself in the advent of myriad things is enlightenment.

What this means is that when we approach things carrying our conditioning, ideas, or opinions, our perceptions are colored by them. This is the "burden of oneself" we carry. Unless we can empty ourselves and enter the moment free and open, our perceptions are clouded by delusion, and we can't see things clearly.

For example, if you are female and your mother has repeatedly told you, "Don't trust men; they're only out to use you," based on her bad experiences with the opposite sex, it may be difficult for you to approach a man openly, with an empty cup. If you have been used by a man and have had your mother's opinion reinforced, it will be even more difficult. Conversely, men carry much of what our fathers and uncles told us about women, what our own experiences have been, what we've read, and what advertising presents us. This becomes part of ourselves. It takes a great effort to unload this burden and see a woman, as she is when we meet her. To see with the eyes of a sentient being is to see through this filter of the self.
To see with Buddha's eyes is different. The second part of Zen Master Dogen's statement reads, "Acting on and witnessing oneself in the advent of myriad things is enlightenment." The myriad things (all beings) come forth as they are and confirm ourselves as we are. We learn from all beings what we are when we allow them to come forth as they are and see ourselves in their light. Then, as Angelus Silesius says, "God visits us;" we are no longer incomplete but full, with nothing lacking, in Buddhist terms, "awake." Then we see with Buddha's eyes.

If we see with Buddha's eyes, everything is fresh and new, for we receive things with a free and open mind, empty of preconceptions. My master, Dainin Katagiri, had a way of approaching each encounter freshly, open to what was happening at that moment, with no carry over from what had happened in the past. Whenever I re-connected with him after a bad interaction, I never felt that he was still carrying anything. This was one of his greatest strengths.

Children are also like this. I worked for a time in the early seventies in a residential facility for children with behavioral problems. Sometimes we had prolonged negative interactions with young children. I frequently had to physically restrain eight to twelve-year-olds for up to an hour to keep them from hurting themselves or others when they were acting-out strong emotions. After the episode was over, I'd be sitting in the office gathering myself and, as if nothing had happened, the child would walk in and ask me to go out and play ball.

How many times have we seen children arguing and screaming at each other one minute and playing nicely, the best of buddies, the next? They can drop one moment's mental state and move on to the next with little carry-over. In our practice, this is called emptying the cup, cultivating an open mind, one that is able to meet every moment and be filled by it, rather than remaining closed and filling the moment from our own side. This is something we lose when we get older, and something we cultivate in our practice of zazen.
In the story we began with, the master showed the scholar how ideas and opinions about Buddha's way fill our cups and, as a result, we are unable to absorb true teaching when we encounter it. This teaching can come to us in the form of a living master who embodies it in everyday life. When encountering such a teacher, you should, in the words of Zen Master Dogen:

Listen to the teaching without trying to make it conform to your own self-centered viewpoint; otherwise, you will be unable to understand what is said.... Unify your body and mind and receive the Master's teaching as if water were being poured from one vessel into another.

The teaching can also come to us through any being, sentient or otherwise. If we are open to it, if our cups are empty, the water will fill them; if not, the water will flow onto the floor and be lost.

i) Kerja Dahulu kemudian sambung Master..
atau ii) Terus buat Master kemudian terus sambung kerja.
Jadi aku tak tahu apa pilihan aku sekarang.

Post-College Graduation Stress and Anxiety

22 Perkara Perlu Tahu sebelum Sambung Master
==========================================
----------------------------------------------------------
4) Ada terlebih banyak sangat waktu yang panjang. Bayangkan dalam satu semester hanya ada 4 subjek. Satu subjek 3 jam seminggu. Setiap minggu ada satu kelas sahaja. Kalau ambil full time memang banyak masa.
----------------------------------------------------------
Mode Full Research : Kajian Sepenuhnya.
Yang ketiga:
Mix mode : Belajar beberapa sahaja subjek ditambah dengan penulisan tesis untuk mendapatkan sijil Sarjana. Anda boleh sambung Ph.D terus.
Full time study : 2 – 3 tahun
Part time study : 2 – 4 tahun
----------------------------------------------------------
Finish what you’ve started.
Jadi teruskan kejayaan selagai nyawa dikandung badan. Semoga segala pengorbanan anda dirahmati oleh Allah swt.

Big money in oil? I’ll take a pay cut just to get a job now, undergrads say

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 ― They used to dream of a RM7,000 basic monthly salary in their first year of employment, with thousands of ringgit more just from allowances. But now, petroleum engineering students say they have doubts about their career choice as they witness the oil & gas (O&G) industry lay off tens of thousands of workers worldwide.
Malay Mail Online spoke to several petroleum engineering students who said much of their optimism and confidence for a solid career in the O&G industry has been shaken after seeing the unexpected prolonged oil price rout ravage what was once considered the most stable and lucrative job market.
They related how they were lured into studying petroleum engineering by expectations of a five-figure salary during the oil boom years. But now these students are sobering up to the fact that they may be jobless as the industry takes a scythe to their skilled workforce.
“I don't mind taking a pay cut. Anything. As long as I get a job. I know it's hard to get a job in O&G now so getting a job itself is already good enough,” said Jason, a 21-year-old engineering student with HELP University who had planned to take up petroleum engineering in the US.
According to a Forbes report last October, today’s “great depression” in the oil market has claimed more than 200,000 jobs worldwide, with 2 per cent of the casualties from Malaysia.
More cycles of retrenchment are expected this year as the oil price slump is forecast to continue up until 2020, industry observers said.
State-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) has also predicted the next two to three years will be tough as it grapples with falling crude oil prices while seeking to keep its multi-billion dollar projects on track. Brent crude oil price dipped below US$28 (RM123) a barrel yesterday on the prospect of more supply from Iran amid a saturated market.
For Jason, even the prospect of an oil price rebound in the coming years has failed to rebuild his confidence in the fossil fuel market.
He has since changed his study course to mechanical engineering, a career he deemed to be more stable than the volatile O&G industry.
But the study swap mid-stream comes at a high price. A year at a private university like HELP costs around RM25,000. Jason was already in his third year.
Career change an option?
Not all oil students are as fortunate as Jason who admitted his family is well-to-do. Arif Hazman, a second year petroleum geoscience student at the prestigious Universiti Technology Petronas (UTP) in Perak, said starting a new study course is not a viable option due to his middle-class background
“To be honest I am quite worried about my future. It looks very tough… when I enrolled, my course produced among the most sought-after graduates. But that was of course before the oil price drop,” he told Malay Mail Online.
Like many of his peers, Ariff never thought he would see the kind of panic gripping the oil industry today. When he applied for a spot in UTP, he expected to make big money in oil after graduating. According to salary consultancy firm, Payscale, the average pay for a petroleum engineer in Malaysia was RM119,358 a year as of September last year.
Now Ariff says he is thinking of pursuing a Master's degree in hopes it could lead to wider career options than what his current degree can offer. For a petroleum geoscience student, the career option is in upstream, which happens to be the sector with the most layoffs. But again, doing a postgraduate course means coughing up more money. A year at UTP costs upwards of RM18,000 in tuition fees and accommodation.
“Maybe I can teach. I'll have a few years to wait it out,” he said, hoping for the oil market to stabilise, “And then see what I can do.”
KS Ng, director of executive recruitment firm Career Channel, said the hiring prospect in the upstream sector is virtually non-existent right now. Providing a glimpse into the bleak employment situation in the O&G industry, Ng revealed how his company was forced to close a newly set up division that was meant to specialise in poaching talented upstream oil workers.
“We had set the division up mid last year but it was tough and it didn't really kick off. This side of business did not give us the desired results so we had to shut it down,” Ng told Malay Mail Online, adding that the company has shifted its focus back to recruitment for O&G's managerial jobs, which Ng said was still surviving.
“Even so, companies are still retrenching,” he added.
Adjust and adapt
Malay Mail Online reported last Monday that skilled foreign workers, upstream and downstream, were the first to be laid off due to their high salaries. Although this gives Malaysian staff temporary relief since their lower salaries means their employers can still afford to keep them, uncertainties remain.
Malaysian Employer Federation president Datuk Shamsudin Bardan said petroleum engineering graduates must now adjust their expectations and adapt to the volatile environment by adopting and honing new skills, the best bet to secure employment.
“For graduates without experience, it is very bleak,” he told Malay Mail Online when asked about employment chances in the O&G industry today. “Be realistic. You need to try and seek employment that is not related to the field. Don't be sticky about wages. Since it is the private sector, they pay based on your performance. So if you perform they will pay you accordingly,” he added.
But not all options are lost even as massive layoffs means graduates face stiffer competition for limited jobs. According to Ariff, many of his seniors who graduated amid the oil market bust had surprisingly landed jobs ― but in smaller companies or contractors and with much lower pay.
“That's quite a surprise actually. A lot of the seniors I know got jobs. But with smaller companies lah. But I think that's good enough for now considering the situation. If me I wouldn't mind getting a lower salary too. As long as I get a job,” he said.
Despite the uncertainties clouding over the oil industry today, there are no hard data to show the number of students changing courses or a drop in enrollment in petroleum engineering. There was also no data to show how many of these students managed to secure a job or are jobless.
One of the local varsities that offers the course, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, claimed they have not seen a drop in applications for their petroleum engineering course.
“It hasn't affected the applications yet. But I'm not sure about the future though. Let’s see in the next few years,” said a marketing official.

Women

At the beginning of time, Twashtri--the Vulcan of Hindu mythology--created the world. But when he wished to create a woman, he found that he had employed all his materials in the creation of man. There did not remain one solid element. Then Twashtri, perplexed, fell into a profound meditation from which he aroused himself and proceeded as follows:

He took the roundness of the moon, the undulations of the serpent, the entwinement of clinging plants, the trembling of the grass, the slenderness of the rose-vine and the velvet of the flower, the lightness of the leaf and the glance of the fawn, the gaiety of the sun's rays and tears of the mist, the inconstancy of the wind and the timidity of the hare, the vanity of the peacock and the softness of the down on the throat of the swallow, the hardness of the diamond, the sweet flavor of honey and the cruelty of the tiger, the warmth of fire, the chill of snow, the chatter of the jay and the cooing of the turtle dove.

He combined all these and formed a woman. Then he made a present of her to man. Eight days later the man came to Twashtri, and said: "My Lord, the creature you gave me poisons my existence. She chatters without rest, she takes all my time, she laments for nothing at all, and is always ill; take her back;" and Twashtri took the woman back.

But eight days later the man came again to the god and said: "My Lord, my life is very solitary since I
returned this creature. I remember she danced before me, singing. I recall how she glanced at me from the corner of her eye, how she played with me, clung to me. Give her back to me," and Twashtri returned the woman to him.

Three days only passed and Twashtri saw the man coming to him again.
"My Lord," said he,

"I do not understand exactly how it is, but I am sure that the woman causes me more annoyance than pleasure.I beg you to relieve me of her."

But Twashtri cried:
"Go your way and do the best you can."

And the man cried: "I cannot live with her!"

"Neither can you live without her!" replied Twashtri.

And the man went away sorrowful, murmuring: "Woe is me, I can neither live with nor without her."

Anxiety

Kebebasan mutlak menjadikan manusia mengalami kebingungan

"Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom".

What Is Your Dominant Desire Based On What You See?

Jadi, nak dijadikan cerita, aku buat satu test ni. Hurm

LOVE

You are ruled by your desire to be connected to others. Whether it is a romantic connection you seek, or the deep abiding intimacy of family or friendship, it is what fuels you and keeps you motivated. You have a warm and compassionate soul and a nurturing spirit which draws others to you. You see people for everything that they can be and all the wonder that they contain within them; and this drives you to connect to them. It is no doubt that no matter where life's journey takes you, you will always be surrounded by those who care for you and a bountiful love which encompasses you.

Being Too Nice Might Be Making You Depressed

Depression is a strange phenomena.  If you have ever been depressed or have been close to a loved one who suffered from it, then you know that it crops up in the most likely and unlikely of places, and seems to drag the life out of you like a plague of the mind.  And while it’s easy to hide your depression, there are a few things you can start doing right now that may have a positive effect on the way you view life at the moment.

It starts with how nice you are to people.  Yes, it’s generally always a good idea to be nice to people, because why not?  But there is such a notion as being way too nice, too caring and too “understanding.”  Many people, including myself, tend to have a need to gain people’s approval, which is a large obstacle in overcoming depression.

Thinking that your opinion is worthless, that your thoughts don’t matter, and that you bring nothing to the table are all things that can lead you down dark paths in life.  The first thing you can do is stop caring about what anyone else thinks.  The only person that’s ultimately going to change your life is you, and because of this, there is only one person you need to please, only one person you need to care about, and only one person whose opinion actually matters, and that person is you.

There is a balance to be had in everything in life, and how we interact with one another is no different.  If you care too much, someone will care too little. If you are too available, others will always be too preoccupied.  You’ll always be waiting for people, feeling like your time is less valuable than theirs.

Never let toxic people fill your life.  Being alone is more than okay, and no one should have to suffer for companionship.  Give yourself the time and leniency that life demands of you.  Figuring out who you are and what you want out of life is what you should be focused on, always be chasing after your needs and wants.  Be good for you, and others will follow suit.
